After June’s heatwave and with July warming up fast, your boiler and heating system might be the last thing on your mind, but now’s actually the ideal time to give them some attention.
Even in summer, your boiler works quietly behind the scenes to provide hot water for showers, taps, washing machines, and dishwashers. Ignoring it can lead to surprises later on just when you need it most.
Here’s what we recommend you do at home:
- Run your heating for 5–10 minutes once a month, this keeps valves and pumps moving
- Listen for unusual noises kettling, hissing or clunking can be early signs of build-up
- Check your boiler pressure it should usually sit between 1 and 1.5 bar
- Look for leaks around the boiler, taps, and outdoor pipes, especially after winter
- Make sure your radiators aren’t stuck closed, gently open and close valves to free them up
The good news? Many common problems can be prevented with simple steps and timely maintenance.
Have an Unvented Hot Water Cylinder?
Unvented cylinders need a little care too.
They are pressurised systems, and like any pressure-based setup, they rely on working safety valves and expansion vessels. If these go unchecked, they can affect your hot water temperature, pressure, and even lead to leaks over time.
Things to watch out for:
1. Low or dropping pressure
2. Hot water running cooler than usual
3. Drips or water stains around the cylinder
